Monday

  1. What does it mean to burn calories? Calories are a measure of the energy your body takes in through food. Your body needs energy to do everything it does. But you need a lot more energy to dance than to watch TV! If you don’t use or “burn” off enough calories, then they turn into fat. I don’t want you worrying about getting fat or using your calories. Your goal should be to eat healthy and live healthy. Living healthy means not just sitting all day but getting up and moving. One way to do that is with chores. Yeah!
  2. I wasn’t kidding telling you to do cleaning to exercise. Check out this list of how many calories you burn doing housework.

Learning to type is a life skill that you will need throughout high school. Now is the time to learn. You can't learn it any sooner. ;) So, have a good attitude and have fun. I know this is meant for younger children, but that makes it an easy start. Go for it!

      1. Do Level 1, stage 1 of Dance mat typing.
Now, let's start learning about the computer a bit more. Read and follow the directions below.
      1. Internet Safety Reminders: Do not download anything onto your computer without permission. Do not click on any advertising on a website even if it looks like a game to play. You can also turn off advertising, so you don’t see bad images. Don’t give out your name, address, phone number, email address, photo, etc. online without permission. Do you remember these words: browser, desktop, window, crash, loading, refresh, download? If not, ask someone.
      2. Internet safe search — When you want to find something on the internet, you have to be careful how you look for it. Here are some tips. Be as specific as possible in your search. Type as many words as you know that will help you find what you are looking for. That will help keep things you are not looking for from coming up. Also, use kid friendly search engines. Here is another place you can go to search. You can turn on youtube’s safety switch at the bottom of any youtube page. You can also ask your parents to turn on Google safe search. Other sites’ safe searches do not work well.
      3. Internet Safety — Here are some tips for staying safe when you use the internet. Never sign up for anything online without permission. When a site asks for a username, you are not supposed to give your real name. Make up a pretend name for yourself. Never tell anyone online your real name, address, phone number or email address unless your parents tell you it is okay. Even if it’s a friend online, don’t give them information about yourself unless you have permission.

          3. There are three main areas of a landscape painting: the foreground (what’s up front), the middle ground and the background. It’s like three layers. The people are in the foreground. Can you see the middle and backgrounds? The background is not really clear. The top of the mountain is kind of covered with some clouds. It’s not sharp. I think the focal point is where the light hits in the middle ground.

          5. What’s in the foreground? middle? back?  Again, the background is muted, not clear. It’s far away. The foreground in this picture is the plants. They aren’t important. The action is in the middle ground.

              3. About coal mining: Coal was needed in vast quantities for the Industrial Revolution. For centuries, people in Britain had made do with charcoal if they needed a cheap and easy to acquire fuel. What ‘industry’ that existed before 1700, did use coal but it came from coal mines that were near to the surface and the coal was relatively easy to get to. The Industrial Revolution changed all of this. Before the Industrial Revolution, two types of mines existed : drift mines and bell pits. Both were small scale coal mines and the coal which came from these type of pits was used locally in homes and local industry. However, as the country started to industrialise itself, more and more coal was needed to fuel steam engines and furnaces. The development of factories by Arkwright and the improvement of the steam engine by Watt further increased demand for coal. As a result coal mines got deeper and deeper and coal mining became more and more dangerous.Coal shafts could go hundreds of feet into the ground. Once a coal seam was found, the miners dug horizontally. However, underground the miners faced very real and great dangers. Flooding was a real problem in mine explosive gas (called fire damp) would be found the deeper the miners got. One spark from a digging miner’s pick axe or candle could be disastrous poison gas was also found underground pit collapses were common; the sheer weight of the ground above a worked coal seam was colossal and mines were only held up by wooden beams called props.  (from http://www.historylearningsite.co.uk/coal_mines_industrial_revolution.htm)
              4. Industrial Revolution — coal was an important part of running all these new factories. Farming was no longer the main economy of the country. We were producing more from factories now and coal was the fuel for those factories. Here’s a picture of kids working in a mine.

              5. Watch this video on the industrial revolution.
